It’s the front yard of a city that incorporated in 1877 and swallowed the older town of Mellonville six years later.

Across the way, Veterans Memorial Park holds down the west end of Seminole Boulevard. It’s a 4.8, quieter, more contemplative, and it connects to the Riverwalk. You can do the whole stretch in an afternoon and feel like you covered the spine of the city.

The Dogs Get a Park, You Get the Show

Sanford is a walking town, and it knows your dog is part of the deal. Paw Park of Historic Sanford on French Avenue is a 4.6-rated off-leash spot that borders the historic Georgetown district. Elev8 Fun, also on Towne Center Circle, is a 4.4-rated entertainment complex. Arcade, trampolines, the works. You will spend money if you go inside. But the building sits in the Towne Center area, and the walk around the plaza is free, if that’s your version of a good time. We’d rather be on the Riverwalk.

One Weekend, Zero Dollars

If you time it right, February brings Sanford Porchfest, a free grassroots music festival on the fourth Saturday of the month. Bands play from porches across the historic residential downtown, and it’s run by a nonprofit that funds youth arts programs. It’s the best argument for Sanford’s walkability, because you’ll cover miles just hopping from house to house, listening to music you didn’t pay to hear.

That’s the city in a nutshell. A place that made its name on celery after the oranges died, rebuilt its downtown around a river, and figured out that the best things in town were always outside, on the street, and in the open air. Sanford doesn’t need you to spend money to feel its pulse. It just needs you to show up.
